Our Teachers In Action Team
Our Teachers In Action team is comprised of four teachers teaching at two different schools: Stephen Spratt and Colin Barry of St. Matthew's School and Jennifer Kendell and Meagan Careen of Holy Cross Elementary, Holyrood.
Jennifer Kendell: I am a grade six teacher at Holy Cross Elementary and I have been teaching for ten years. I have a Bachelor of Education (primary/elementary) degree and a Master of Education (Curriculum Studies) degree. My Math class consists of sixteen students (eight boys and eight girls) who love using technology, playing Math games, and working with groups to solve problems.
Meagan Careen: I graduated from MUN in 2012 with a Physical Education and Secondary/Intermediate Education Degree. I am currently completing my Masters in Physical Education and will be finished in the Fall of 2015. I teach Physical Education and Grade 6 Math and Science at Holy Cross Elementary in Holyrood. In my grade six Math class, I have a total of 15 students (eight boys and 7 girls) with a range of abilities. Many of my students are visual and tactile learners who love to play games and use technology in Math class.
Colin Barry: I graduated from MUN with a Bachelor of Arts (French major, History minor) and Bachelor of Education (Primary/Elementary) in 2006. In 2013, I complete a Master of Education (Leadership). I have been teaching the Intensive Core French program in grade 6 for 7 years presently at St. Matthew's School. I have been fortunate enough to be involved with the STEM grant with the "Integrative Thinking" or iThink program last year. This is my first year using the flipped classroom model and have loved the experience. This year, I have a class of 24 students - 12 boys and 12 girls.
Steve Spratt: I have been teaching at St. Matthew’s School for the past nine years in grade six and have taught at a number of schools since 1998. I have completed at MUN a Bachelor of Education (Elem) with a Concentration in Religious Studies and a Master of Education (Leadership). Currently, I am studying Technology in Education at CBU. This is my second year incorporating “the flipped classroom” into my Math curriculum and it has motivated me as a teacher. My math class this year consists of 12 students 7 female and 5 male. Technology is a major part of my classroom and "the flipped classroom" model allows for an easy transition.
